Select Digital Print Group goes back to basics

The return of Tara Wilson-Black to the helm of Select Digital Print Group after nearly a year’s maternity leave has fast tracked her decision to bring the company “back to basics”. Wilson won the “Young Print Manager of the year back in 2005 and since then her company has won a cluster of Irish Print Awards including the prestigious HP large-format print award at the Irish Print Awards late last year.

Considered by her peers to be one of the best exponents of high quality large-format print in Ireland she has built up the Select Digital Print Group over eight years to now encompass four distinct divisions, Select Digital Print, Select Sign and Display, Select Print and Select Creative. However, Wilson has used her time away from the busy workplace to map out a new route for the company in partnership with her husband Philip Black.

“In 2010 I decided to take the year out, have a baby and concentrate on family life,” she said. “I also needed to re-group because the industry was changing, print houses were closing down and I had to work out how to move the company forward and continue the success which Select Digital has enjoyed to date. To do this it was important to find my focus again and capture a way to make the Select Digital better but most importantly, survive the downturn.”

Wilson realised that although she could not change the global economic situation she could change her business model. “I started going back to basics, peeling back the layers,” she added. ”What I found is people do business with people they like and respect, and a lot of people respect me in the print industry. My main focus this year is re-connecting with our customers to find out how best Select Digital can help them. I’m going to start looking to do business with my neighbours, people on my own doorstep. The plan is to build relationships which in time will turn into real business. It’s very easy to be different, but very difficult to be better.”
