NCAD 2011 exhibition opens
The 2011 National College of Art and Design graduate and postgraduate exhibitions are currently taking place take place (until Sunday 19 June) at the NCAD campus on Thomas street, Dublin 8. Each year it showcases the best work of students studying in the faculties of sesign, education and fine art. NCAD offers the largest range of art and design degrees in the state at undergraduate level and is the major provider of postgraduate studies in art and design nationally. A key area is the Faculty of Fine Art which also specialises in large-format printed textiles using the college’s in-house Mimaki TX2.
Samantha Corcoran, BA (Hons), Acting Lecturer in Printed Textiles commented: “The 2011 NCAD printed textiles graduates have once again exhibited creativity, originality and print skills in their final year show. All the work spans a broad range of new and contemporary applications including both fashion and interiors. Exciting developments within their print approach include work with resist techniques, and multiprocessing with foils, metallics, flock, devore, cross dye and illumination. The appreciation of traditional screen print approaches and techniques has been brought to a new contemporary level by combining it with the technology of digital print , using the colleges Mimaki TX2.”
Corcoran singled out some names at this year’s exhibition. “Julie Flynn’s fashion collection comments on our current economic situation, albeit in a beautiful ethereal and contemporary way. Gold and glitzy foil on geometric darks moves through the collection to a more natural organic soft digital approach on delicate silks.
“Jane Kenny’s collection displays an understanding of the contemporary woman – strong , original, creative. Her fabrics are feminine with an edgy twist using a combination of silks and leathers. Large scale , painterly slashes across the body with devore/foil/metallics are mixed in with exquisite digital floating iris petals.
“Triona O’Neill explores digital fabric for contemporary interior spaces, linked to creative thinking. Her work is influenced by physicist Erwin Schrodinger’s influential paper ‘What is Life’, which explores visually some of his discoveries and theories on DNA and genetic information.”
The 2011 NCAD Printed Textiles graduates show that the future is bright for the printed textiles industry. Their creativity, originality, determination and embracing of traditional skills and technical knowledge in combination with new digital technology is refreshing to see.
