Gillespie Screen Print shows how digital and screen can work hand in hand
Dublin-based Gillespie Screen Print has again demonstrated the benefits of marrying screen and digital print technologies to overcome digital colour constraints and create eye catching graphics. When one of Ireland’s oldest ice cream makers HB decided to promote its new range of fruity yoghurts, Frusi, one of the key elements of the promotion involved using printed graphics which included large white clear backgrounds. A major consideration also was that the finished product had to have longevity and be hard wearing.
Gillespie Screen Print, formed in 1990 by brothers Kevin and Joe, has historically been very strong in retail POS and the Frusì project enabled the company to showcase its skill in this area as Kevin explained.
“Each graphic was 800mm wide x 1975mm in length,” he said. “The job was digitally printed on a ColorSpan DisplayMaker 72uvr UV Printer in reverse and then the white background was screen printed over this. An adhesive was also screen printed over the white and finally a release liner applied. The finished graphic was designed to be used on the sides of the upright fridges which HP uses as POS units in retail outlets. A 400 mic PVC was chosen as the substrate because of its rigidity which it’s easier to apply than vinyl where you can get bubbles during application. Also, sometimes people use very aggressive cleaners which is why the graphic is behind the white background to ensure that it is fully protected. The company’s ability to use both its screen and digital capability in tandem means that jobs like this do not present any difficulty.”
